The 4th Fighter Group was activated on 12 September 1942. Based in Debden, England, the three Eagle Squadrons of the Royal Air Force (71, 121 and 133) provided the core US pilot group. In the Eighth Air Force they became the 334th, 335th, and 336th Squadrons. Starting with Spitfires, then P-47 Thunderbolts and finally P-51 Mustangs, the 4th became the highest scoring US fighter group of the war.
